The Universal Principles

Where does the order in the universe come from? What laws regulate the movements of the atoms, molecules, cells, organs, bodies, planets, galaxies in an intricate dance with ever renewed breathtakingly beautiful patterns? The human mind has formulated laws out of universal principles to ensure a viable passage on earth.

What is a principle? It’s an element without which what exists could not exist. Principles regulate all levels of existence. We cannot ignore them with impunity. If you know the traffic laws of a country and abide by them, you will have an easy journey. If I insist on driving a car in Germany in the same way I drive in the UK there will be an accident just around the corner. By understanding the nature of these principles and aligning ourselves to their dynamism we can benefit from them. If we abide by the laws of any country in which we find ourselves, we will have a harmonious and peaceful stay. In the same way becoming aware of the laws that regulate us here can make our stay on earth a pleasurable and productive experience. The respect and the sympathy that we have towards the grieving people suffering from worldwide conflicts and tragedies are universal. Faced with disaster, at times we become sensitive to a subtle equilibrium pervading our nature. When developed further, this awareness ensures our full and complete presence as cosmic beings in the solar system. One of the meanings of the word cosmos, incidentally, is order.

I should perhaps state that personally I have no specific religious or philosophical affiliation, although I have the deepest respect for our mystical heritage, which has revealed itself in many cultures throughout the world. I don’t seek to conform to any religious or philosophical paradigm. Nor do I aim to dispute or contradict any particular viewpoints. I sincerely hope that the adherent of this philosophy or that religion, the agnostic and the atheist, will find stimulation but not confrontation.

It appears to me that this life of ours is governed or regulated by the principles which I identify, and, as I have observed, our stay here on earth may be more fruitful if we are aware of them. Five of these principles I locate within “the domain of space, time, and matter”, and these five principles are gender, causation, correspondence, rhythm, and polarity. They are active in the material and biological world, as well as in the more subtle and complex arena of human relationships, emotions, and ideas.

The four remaining principles - vibration, creative impulse, insight/illumination, communication/communion - I consider to be “outside” this physical universe. They operate in and from a transcendent dimension, so we may say that they have no material base. Yet I notice, and I believe other people can experience this, that they make their presence felt here. And as we become sensitive to that presence, it manifests in a way that is increasingly powerful. Of course the relationship between the transcendent and the material has preoccupied humanity for tens of thousands of years. In some spiritual traditions, all such distinctions collapse and the dualistic conceptions of the sacred and the profane, within or beyond the physical world, are transcended. Yet these definitions remain used and useful as modes of explanation and it is in this spirit that they are used here. So we will move back and forth between our daily world and more subtle realms.

In my work, I come across many instances of self-inflicted restrictions. And once we accept limitations on ourselves, we constrain those close to us. As far as I have been able to discover, however, there are no real limits to the consciousness of any human being, including those with, so-called “learning difficulties”. But as long as we persist with our own particular learning difficulties, we will feel restricted. This feeling of constraint is inevitable, but transient and illusory. We impose it on ourselves and we can dissolve it ourselves.

When we consider humanity, when we look at the universe, we see nothing but change in matter, in forces and in mental states. Nothing endures but change. This realisation, paradoxically, produces a need and a yearning for permanence and continuity, but as we explore deeper into our own psyche, we realise that all of these changes must be but outward manifestations of some greater or deeper realities. As we delve into the mysteries, the separation between the person we understand ourselves to be and the person we feel that we could be becomes obvious; this creates a psychological insecurity from which we try to distract ourselves, however unconsciously, by means of mind-games, superstitions and different belief systems, or – particularly prevalent today -- through psychic activities and spiritual pursuits. This only exacerbates the yearnings. Attempts to reach outwards or inwards -- God out there, God within -- may produce misery and occasionally, given our puritanical society, the belief that life, to be worthwhile, must be difficult. At times, through a supreme act of imagination, we lift ourselves out of that misery and, like the climber who has reached the top of the mountain and can look down at the network of roads to see which paths actually do lead to the peak, we discover a map that can bring us to a greater understanding of what we are beyond who we are and of the nature of the universe that we reflect.

I will give a brief description of each of the nine principles, starting with
The principle of rhythm

Cycles recur, as the principle of rhythm explains. The great breath of rhythm is at the basis of matter, time and space. Its movement is found in the tides of the sea, in the rising and falling of the human chest, in the great social structures interweaving their eddies propelled by aspiration. Empires are born, reach their peak, decline and disappear.

We can see rhythm everywhere: in the tides, the seasons, the breath and the orbits of the planets. Even in human affairs we usually notice the fall of that which rises; the departure of that which arrives. A system that is harmonious, orderly, and with purpose is in balance: its movements appear regulated, poised, and dynamic. The elements that maintain rhythmic equilibrium - hormones in the body, for example - are themselves complex “messengers”.

Rhythmic movement is oscillation between two poles: the movement towards a pole, the moment of arrival, the return towards the other pole. Rhythm is therefore the movement from one pole to another pole, between one strong beat and a weaker beat. This introduces a faster and finer oscillation in the movement, and as the two poles come closer to one another, it leads to “neutralisation”, a principle secondary to the principle of rhythm. Rhythm underlies health and disease, success and failure. Attention to the pulse - of the body, of dance, of music, of nature - can restore failing equilibrium.

In some circumstances, rhythmic movement appears to become very fine, fluid, subtle, and harmonious. For example, an individual who is fully at ease with the masculine and feminine elements of their psyche may move rapidly from one to the other in an effortless, seamless flow. Here, the principle of “neutralisation” appears. The oscillations become so fine and rapid that they in effect produce a new state of being. The poles lose their polarity. A transformation occurs, a different state arises, an old pattern dies, a new creation manifests. In daily life we may experience this as “moving on” instead of “moving to and fro”.

The movement of rhythm is at the service of the ultimate sequence : revelation, creation, absorption and destruction. Revelation! What is it all about? To understand the nature of what is revealed, we must call upon another principle, which is the essence of movement itself. Everything that will come into existence is first vibration.

The principle of vibration

The principle of vibration is a bridge between the transcendent dimension and the universe, between being and existence. It appears that a timeless energy, unbound by space, somehow “wishes” to create. There must be a bridge or connection between this “wish” and the material from which and in which living creatures are born.

The creating thought behind the cosmos focuses and gives birth to an apparently infinite range of frequencies and vibrational patterns. These patterns become more concrete in the myriad subtle and gross forms with which we are familiar: not only planets, trees, and animals for example, but also ideas, aspirations, and levels of consciousness. Each individual, every relationship, every cell has its own unique vibration, characterised by the ratio of contraction to expansion.

The deepest transformation entails movement to finer and finer vibrations - closer to the frequency of pure light and liberation. This movement is achieved by an inner release of energy that was, perhaps, previously blocked and contracted. This release is partly psychological but may also be experienced at a more profound level with a change in the vibrational rate at biological level, within the cells of the organism. There is ultimately one vibration, out of which the universe is created, and this universe is a multitude of secondary vibrations whose specific frequencies are slower than the speed of light.

The universe is expanding, the astrophysicists tell us, and that is exemplified in the movement of galaxies fleeing away from one another. Galaxies could be compared to dark spots on the wall of a balloon that is blown up. Will this expansion go on for ever? What would stop it so that it starts contracting if not something out of itself? Alien particles, such as the neutrinos do not form part of the constituents of matter. In 1987, cosmologists witnessed the explosion of a super nova accompanied by a shower of neutrinos that struck our galaxy. Could these particles be carriers of an extraordinary range of information? What relevance has the principle of vibration got to do with our subject?

Everything that exists is a frequency that can be measured, from the earth frequency called the Schumann frequency which used to be 7.8 Hertz to the frequencies of the organs of the human body. The new physics affirm that where there is matter there is energy, and where there is energy there is consciousness. Consciousness is therefore a frequency and so is love.

We are faced at the moment with the amazing phenomenon of the acceleration of the earth’s frequency from 7.8 to 8.6 Hertz and perhaps more, discovery that explained the malfunctioning of the instruments of communication of the military and the aviation of the 1980’s. Speculation abounds as to the cause of this phenomenon but for our purpose let us retain that the mineral, vegetable, animal and human kingdoms are all affected. And so is our consciousness. Revelation is therefore concomitant with a deepening level of consciousness on our part. We are beginning to perceive subtler structures, to recognise the dynamic interaction of personal, social, national and international energetic currents, which the refinement of the information technology allows to reveal. And we are helped in the perception of these subtler structures by principles operating in time, space and matter, regulating our everyday reality. The principles of correspondence, causation, gender and polarity will be discussed in the next article.
